Winter wonderland coming to Warrington

November 22, 2015 by

Warrington Borough Council (WBC) welcomed the temporary creation of a winter wonderland this year.

The project is to be located on a vacant site. There should be festive activity there throughout the Christmas season and it will only come to an end in the New Year. It could be that calendar printing in Warrington benefits from the potential boost to retail in the area. Professor Steven Broomhead told the Warrington Guardian:

“This project is great news for visitors to Bridge Street and the town centre this Christmas and New Year and an ideal opportunity for Christmas shoppers and their families who also want to enjoy some festive family fun. This is a commercial project that should add to the great festive experience in the town.”

Professor Broomhead stressed that WBC is completely behind the scheme. A fairground is due to occupy the space. The private company Silcock’s intends to establish itself there.

The area used to be occupied by an art deco structure, which once housed a Ritz cinema. However, the iconic architecture eventually caught fire back in April and the option of demolition was taken as a result. This left a gap within the centre of the town.

There is no certainty about what will be done on the site next year. An earlier proposal to convert the land into a zone for youth may not be implemented because the fire seems to have changed local thinking.
