Swindon’s apprentice enters global skills contest

Daryl Head, an apprentice from Nationwide Swindon, will participate in a global skills event.

Head left school five years ago. Since then, his hard work has meant that he has been given the title of Nationwide Apprentice of the Year. Local apprentices can access business cards in Swindon. Having competed at the National Skill Competition, he is prepared to take on a wider challenge in Abu Dhabi. Head told the Swindon Advertiser:

“It has been a tremendous experience for me so far and I would not have been able to achieve this without the support of Nationwide, friends, family and Thatcham Research.”

Head is a paint technician and he first learned about vehicle repairs by working with his self-employed father. Not tempted by the opportunities associated with universities, he successfully graduated from the Thatchham Research Automotive Academy (TRAA) two years ago.

Dean Lander, who heads services for the repairs section of the TRAA, said that they had been really pleased to help Daryl. The organisation has enabled the Abu Dhabi experience by the delivery of resources. Head has got ready for the big challenge by travelling around Europe. He has also taken part in some smaller competitions.

Nationwide’s People Director, Louise Cope, explained how proud her organisation was of him. She paid specific tribute to his determination, wished him luck in the competition and pointed out that his Nationwide career is flourishing.
