Street cricket is coming to Redditch

The Redditch Street Sixes (RSS) competition is set to take place this month.

The organisers of RSS are keen for teams to come forward and enter. The Redditch branch of West Mercia Police (WMP) and Worcestershire Cricket Board (WCB) are co-operating on the summer scheme. Leaflets from Redditch may be used by organisations planning local events at any time of the year.

Mark Chappell, an inspector at WMP, told the Redditch Standard:

“The inspiration came from the street cricket competition in Worcester. We wanted to widen the Wicketz experience and we saw this as a great vehicle to work with children in Redditch during the summer holidays.”

Harry Kitchen of the WCB has been working on the initiative and he explained that the idea is for the event to become a regular fixture on the Redditch calendar.

Several sponsors have got on board to back the event an these include Redditch Town Centre Partnership, Heart of Worcestershire College and Redditch United FC.

The Worcestershire Street Sixes held a corporate event which raised resources for the Redditch festival. Youth groups are encouraged to participate and a free lunch shall be made available to cricketers.

The manager of Redditch United, Darren Byfield, has pledged to turn up. In addition, a celebrity may appear. The excitement should be boosted by the hosting of a penalty contest, while information stalls might encourage higher levels of participation going forward.
