St George’s Day street party being planned

A man who lives in South Mimms, not far from Potters Bar, is planning to organise a special street party to mark St George’s Day, with the aim being to unite his local community.

Glyn Martin is 40 years old and has five children. As part of his plans, Blackhorse Lane is set to be partially closed off on the 23rd April, so that those living in the area can have a big party in the street.

Speaking to the Welwyn Hatfield Times, he stated that he was hoping to help generate a sense of community spirit, as well as marking a day that usually passes fairly unnoticed by people in England.

He went on to add that the idea had been born in the pub, and that all of those getting involved hoped that it could be the beginning of an annual tradition. The party is set to last from noon until 5pm, complete with a bouncy castle to entertain children and spaces for them to ride bikes.

“I spoke to the parish council, which aren’t involved in this one, but next year we would definitely like to make it bigger, close the whole road and get everyone involved.”

Local street parties such as this frequently make use of places offering banner printing, so they can feature colourful celebratory banners.
