Direct mail scam warning for Hertfordshire

November 27, 2011 by

Residents of Hertfordshire are being warned about a mail scam that promises customers prizes after they place an expensive – and fake – order with a company.

According to WH Times, mailings have been sent to homes around the county, claiming to be from a Belgian specialist company that makes chocolates and cakes. Delices and Gourmandes is the name of this company, which has reportedly already caught out several customers in the Hertfordshire region. The mailing promises prizes of luxury Belgian chocolate and more in exchange for orders that then never arrive.

This time of year is rife for scams, with people spending more than they would throughout the rest of the year on gifts and indulgent treats as the Christmas period approaches. Many companies produce their own mail-shots that may look legitimate and professional but that will not have been produced by any reputable printing company.

Potters Bar residents are being warned about the scam and Richard Thake who is a councillor and the cabinet member in charge of community safety spoke to the Welwyn Hatfield times, saying:

“Some consumers that have been caught out by this have sent considerable amounts of money to the company. We want to stop anyone else falling prey to this malicious scam. Please do not be tempted by unsolicited mailings promising ‘guaranteed’ prizes.”

Anyone who is concerned about the scam or who believes that they have more information about this should contact the Hertfordshire Trading Standards department for advice and information about how to deal with it.
