Oxford’s Westgate Centre may boost its neighbours

The Westgate Centre in Oxford could stimulate businesses outside its boundaries.

The Swan & Castle is located opposite the shopping centre. The owners of the public house have witnessed higher footfall as a result of its proximity to the rejuvenated Westgate Centre. Promotional drinkware from Oxford can help businesses in the sector to improve their performance. Colin Cook, a city councillor, told the Oxford Mail:

“The Norfolk Street/Castle Street entrance to the Westgate Centre is almost directly opposite the entrance to Oxford Castle. The two entrances link up very well and I’m sure there will be increased footfall heading into Oxford Castle as a result.”

Councillor Cook pointed out that the Westgate Oxford Alliance (WOA) is the owner of the Oxford Castle site and the retail centre. This opens up a lot of possibilities going forward.

Councillor Cook said that the Castle location has a rich cultural heritage which could enable its renaissance. He explained that the vision of the WOA is all about making the most of the experiences associated with Oxford.

However, the WOA has still got quite a lot of work to do in relation to the retail centre. This is because only half of the units are currently occupied. Councillor Cook stated that the Castle space could start to receive more attention during the course of the next year.
