Permanent jobs for John Lewis temporary staff

Contractors who were working at a John Lewis store in Croydon on a temporary basis over the Christmas period have recently found out that their positions have been made permanent.

Eleven temporary members of staff that were recruited to help out over the busy period have been told that they will be required to continue working at the branch in Purley Way. The branch manager, Glynis Gordon-Stephenson, spoke about the permanent positions and the way that John Lewis recruits members of staff, saying:

“It’s fantastic that we have been able to offer some of our temps permanent roles at John Lewis at Home Croydon. Our recruitment process for temps is very similar to how we recruit permanent partners, so if someone does well in a short-term position, it’s likely they’ve got the skills and acumen needed for longer term roles.”

John Lewis is often looked to as a ‘best practice’ retailer in the sense that it has somewhat bucked the trend of falling sales during the recession. This could be attributed to many things, but the company’s strap line, ‘Never knowingly undersold’, applies to service as well as price and the right employees play a big part in delivering this proposition.

John Lewis also runs advertising campaigns that tie in with its in-store communications, so pos printing at Croydon’s John Lewis at Home branch could also be a factor when determining why the business is growing rather than shrinking in the current challenging economic climate.
