Cardiff’s buses to change focus of on-board advertising

Cardiff Bus, the operator behind one of Cardiff’s main public transport services, has announced its decision to change the focus of its on-board advertising.

Currently, buses in Cardiff carry over 100,000 passengers each day and these passengers encounter a number of advertising messages whilst undertaking their journeys. These messages have traditionally been communicated using poster printing, but Cardiff Bus has recently shaken up their approach to this by installing TV screens in some buses.

There are no plans to stop using poster printing for Cardiff Bus vehicles; however the types of posters will change.

The change in on-board advertising strategy comes as Cardiff Bus tries to attract members of society from areas of the city that are considered to be better-off than the current demographic. The thinking behind this is that posters on buses currently advertise services like personal loans, which only appeal to a certain section of the population of Cardiff. The company hopes that by freeing up advertising space, they can use this to push more messages for their own services and products that will appeal to a wider range of customers.

Speaking about the plan to change how advertising works for Cardiff Bus, David Brown, the firm’s Managing Director, said:

“The spaces that are freed up are increasingly being used to promote our own services, and a campaign to extend our own product advertising on the rear of our newer vehicles is due to commence shortly.”

This change in direction for Cardiff Bus comes as part of wider plans to refresh and modernise the whole company and its bus fleet.
