New posters revealed for the London 2012 Olympics

A range of posters designed by contemporary artists have been unveiled depicting the London 2012 Olympics.

These posters have been created by a number of British artists and feature a range of different styles and techniques. These have been designed by artists including Martin Creed, Bridget Riley and Rachel Whitered. The suite of posters shows that there is still a real appetite in the UK for poster printing.

Bath residents will be pleased to see the work of Howard Hodgkin featured in the Olympics posters. Hodgkin studied at the Bath Academy of Art and his portrayal of a diver in a swimming pool has been well-received by art critics and newspapers alike. Jonathan Jones wrote an article on the posters for The Guardian. In it, he writes:

“To see Howard Hodgkin, grand old man of sensuous painters, reach into the deep blue to create a dreamlike metamorphosis of athlete and water, the diver and the pool, is beautiful. This is more poetry than mere poster.”

The London 2012 OIympics posters are already available to buy in the organisation’s official online shop. The prices for the prints range from £7.00 for a poster to up to £950 for a fine art print. These posters and prints are set to be collectables in future, as most Olympics memorabilia will be and the calibre of design is so high that they would look more at home hung on the walls of a gallery or a stylish apartment than as simple advertising devices.
