Local man helps elderly neighbours

A man from near Ashton-under-Lyne has become a good Samaritan to elderly people living in his local community, by providing them with alternative transport options to help them retain some independence.

Steven Simmons is 31 years old and lives in Tameside. He has been assisting older people near his home is by working to get them specialist mobility scooters, so that it is easier for them to move around on their own.

He got the idea to help out when he saw an elderly woman in the area struggling to get her wheelchair-bound spouse up a hill. A friend filmed him helping them and posted it to social media, where it went viral and led to him being offered mobility scooters to give to the couple.

The gratitude that they showed him and the difference that the scooters made to their lives led him to decide to try and provide the same support to other old people, as he told the Manchester Evening News, before adding:

“I really want to keep this up, it’s so important for older people to maintain their independence and this is one way of helping them to achieve that and get out and about on their own.”

A fundraising page has been set up and charitable projects in Ashton-under-Lyne like this often use newsletter printing, so they can keep the community informed.
