More parking spaces for Swindon

Swindon Borough Council is in the process of transforming the site of an old car park.

The work is likely to deliver significantly more room for parking when completed next month. Over 50 spaces are set to be added to the town centre total. Other efforts to transform Swindon are going ahead, but car parking is an important issue.

Councillor Dale Heenan told the Swindon Advertiser:

“This site is an eyesore and local residents want to see visible progress on town centre regeneration.”

The site is located near Islington Street and it used to accommodate Wyvern Car Park before the multi-storey amenity became disused. Gravel has been covering the area, which has been fenced off for security reasons. The Swindon and Wiltshire Local Enterprise Partnership has resourced the new venture. New ventures can often need the help of printing services for planning purposes and to raise awareness.

When the car park opens, it will be positive news for motorists, holders of blue badges and motorcyclists. Harry Mortimer, a commuter, has discussed the difference that parking makes for users of the town centre. Mortimer suggested that he is more likely to shop in Swindon when the work is finished.

Nevertheless, private transport solutions may not be the answer for the problem of congestion. Mortimer explained that public transport must be upgraded and he is clear that buses can play a vital role in the future of the town.
