University
Cambridge is probably best known for its university, the University of Cambridge, which is one of the best universities in the world. The University of Cambridge features Cambridge University Library, King’s College Chapel and Cavendish Laboratory.
The university is also near the river Cam, where Cambridge’s boat race team practice for their annual race against rivals Oxford. The Oxford/Cambridge rivalry began when students from Oxford fled the town in 1209 because the locals were very hostile. They settled in Cambridge and formed a new university there. Peterhouse was constructed in 1284 and is the oldest surviving college in Cambridge.
Cambridge is situated in Cambridgeshire and is just 50 miles north of London.
Cambridge is also know for ‘Silicon Fen’, the technology centre which is named after Silicon Valley in California.
Cambridge is one of the oldest settlements in the UK, with evidence of a farmstead that predates the Romans, some 3,500 years ago, discovered at Fitzwilliam College.
There are plans in Cambridge to expand on the city, with a proposal for a new ice skating rink being considered. Cambridge had a temporary rink for a few years, and it proved a success. Further development plans are also being considered around the Corn Exchange, which would be good news for print companies in Cambridge.
Printing is a major part of Cambridge’s history, with Cambridge University Press being founded in the city. The
Cambridge printers were given a license in 1534 by Henry VIII and they are the oldest existing book publisher in the world.
