Help to secure the future of the print industry

PrintIT is an initiative led by Proskills. The aim of the initiative is to help young people broaden their knowledge and gain experience in the UK printing industry.
PrintIT!, a major industry-backed programme, along with partners The Fair Trade Foundation, is designed to teach young people about the exciting world of printing and its related industries
The programme is currently available to schools in England running GCSE Graphic Products and GCSE Graphic Design courses. The initiative runs from September to January. Students have to plan a print based campaign based on behalf of Fairtrade. In doing so, they gain experience of the current print industry and become aware of the range of careers available within the industry. Creators of the winning campaign will be invited to a prestigious awards ceromony at Ipex 2010. The exhibition takes place at Birmingham NEC from 18 – 25 May.
This initiative could be extended to cover the whole of the UK. It is making an important contribution to the continuing longevity of the print industry. An interested printing company in Falkirk, for example, could be the first to take part in Scotland. By contacting Proskills, who need more printing companies to take part, they could be instrumental in establishing the initiative in their area. Young people are not aware of the diversity within the print industry and many do not consider it as a career choice. This programme is helping to change young people’s perceptions.
