German travel publisher to set up print operation in Basingstoke

MairDumont, one of the leading travel publishers in Germany, is set to launch its UK operation that will be based in Basingstoke.
The printing company’s Basingstoke branch will take the name of one of MairDumont’s well-known travel brands, Marco Polo. Marco Polo Travel Publishing in the UK will continue to produce maps and cartography and will also undertake the Baedeker travel guide brand with hopes to establish this as a well-known travel brand in this country.
This move is great news for the local economy as the operation will create new jobs at the Marco Polo Travel Publishing printing company in Basingstoke, as well as putting the area on the map for being home to such a prestigious travel brand in the UK. This move shows a real faith not only in digital printing in Basingstoke, but in the UK print industry in general and will come as a real boost to other publishers around the company, some of whom Marco Polo Travel Publishing may look to collaborate with on future projects.
Despite sales of printed travel guides being in decline in recent years, the company remains optimistic that this move will set them in good stead for expansion of both the Marco Polo and Baedeker brands. Baedeker currently publishes 40 travel guides and the company’s sales and marketing director, Ian MacDonald, aims to increase this to 60. MacDonald hopes that the company will also expand into the world of digital publishing once they have established themselves in the UK printing industry.
